A new year is upon us. Many of you may have decided one of your resolutions for 2021 will be to lose weight. Here's how you can keep the motivation you currently have to be healthier lasting throughout the whole year.

For most of us, seeing 2020 in our rearview mirror is a welcome sight. Given how difficult the year turned out to be due to the pandemic, 2021 is showing many promising signs in the form of vaccines and a return to normal life in the hopefully not too distant future.

One of the goals you may have set for yourself this year might be to lose weight. Whether it's something you've wanted to do for a while or something being locked down for the better part of 2020 has precipitated, staying motivated through all of 2021 will be an important part of reaching your ultimate goal. Here's how you can keep that weight loss fire in your belly and not have it fizzle out come February.

How to Keep Your Weight Loss Motivation Going Throughout the Whole Year

It can be easy when a new year rolls around to set goals with the best intentions in mind. One of the most common new year's resolutions centres around going to the gym to either get in better shape or lose weight. But by the time February rolls around, gyms see a precipitous drop in the number of people making their way through the doors.

Here are some tips on how you can stay motivated throughout the entire year, so you accomplish your weight loss or fitness resolutions.

Start off with easier exercises:
If it's been a while since you stepped foot in a gym or worked out, the thought of doing so may seem daunting. That's why it's important to start with some simpler exercises that you know you can accomplish. This will help build your self-confidence and protect you from injuring yourself.

Create a killer playlist:
Whether it's music or podcasts, many people find the motivation they need to push through difficult exercises and workouts by putting a playlist together to give them that extra shot of adrenaline they need to persevere. You may even find yourself looking forward to working out just so you can listen to your favourite tunes or catch up on the podcasts you love.

Get some new workout gear:
A new piece of workout clothing or some new runners could give you the motivation you need to keep hitting the gym or exercising. Look good, feel good, play good, as Neon Deion would say.

5 WAYS YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR MINDSET TO ACHIEVE BETTER WEIGHT LOSS

Get a personal trainer: If you can afford one, a personal trainer or weight loss coach can do wonders for your motivation as you strive to lose weight. They may even have some weight loss programs or challenges you can participate in to kick things up a notch. Given everything going on with COVID, you could always opt for online personal training while gyms and fitness facilities are still restricted.

Try a new class or exercise: If you find yourself getting bored with your workouts, you can always try a new class or exercise to spice things up. There are a lot of free videos online for things like barre, kickboxing, or high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Boot one up, and you might just find the motivation you need to keep up with your weight loss regimen.

Make sure you're getting enough sleep: Not getting enough sleep can have an adverse effect on your desire to work out or exercise. Aim for at least eight hours every night and try to make sure you keep the same routine, even on the weekends.

By instituting some of the above tips and tricks, you should be able to stay better motivated with your new fitness and weight loss resolutions. Should you find yourself getting off track at any point, try not to get too discouraged. It's important that you be able to recognize your failures or shortcomings and quickly correct them so you can return to making positive strides.

FAQs

Q: Should I track my workouts or progress?

Without a doubt. Doing so can be another great way to stay motivated throughout the year as you see just how far you've progressed since you've started.

Q: Can I reward myself with treats or cheat days?

You can, but you need to be careful that all your rewards don't have to do with food. If losing weight is truly important to you, you will want to make lifestyle changes that last. If you continually reward yourself with food that got you into trouble in the first place, you may quickly find yourself reverting back to your old ways once you reach your weight loss goal.

Q: Are there any other motivational tricks you recommend?

Two other great motivational tools include a workout money jar and pampering yourself with a massage after a long week's worth of working out. For the first trick, try to put one dollar (or however much you want) into a jar every time you exercise. Once you reach a specific amount, use the money to treat yourself to an article of clothing you've had your eye on for a while or something else you've been looking forward to.
