For many people holiday weight gain feels inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be. You can even lose weight over the holidays with these 3 simple lifestyle changes.

  1. Get out and move
Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean you need to stay cooped up on the couch. Get out and enjoy the world by going for walks to look at the holiday lights, going ice skating, skiing or even building a snowman. By adding these fun activities to your normal exercise routine you can have fun and lose weight.

  2. Make wise food choices
Celebrating the holidays has become synonymous with food. Donuts for Hanukkah, cookies for Christmas, and a seemingly endless parade of eggnog and canapes can make the allure of food seem almost impossible to resist. To help you lose weight set a limit for canapes and non water drinks for yourself that is strict but not unreasonable. And you can still enjoy your favourite holiday foods, just be sure to limit your portion sizes. When it comes time to enjoy your holiday feast ask for a small plate and be sure to fill half of it with vegetables. You can fill the other half with starches, dairy products and meat, but don’t forget that potatoes are a classified as a starch, not a vegetable. Eat your vegetables first, so that you fill up on them and not the less healthy alternatives. And avoid dips, sauces and gravies if you can.

  3. Recruit a friend
Whether you are going to the gym or engaging in some outdoor fun recruit a friend or two to go with you. This makes the activity more fun, and you won’t feel like you are missing out on the social side of the holiday. It is also useful to try and recruit someone who will be going to the same holiday dinners as you are. If you aren’t the only one eating healthy you won’t feel singled out. It can also be highly beneficial to hire a personal trainer, such as Paul Anthony from Dream Body, to help keep you motivated and on track.
