http://paulanthony.ca/blog/Rookie who set the world on fire

The Rookie who Set the World On Fire

In the World of Competitive sports, there are certain achievements that seem beyond reproach. Consider Gehrig's consecutive game streak. Everyone thought that record was untouchable. Everyone but Cal Ripkin, that is. And one would assume Michael Jordan will always be considered the best hoopster of all time. Of course, they thought the same thing about the Babe as a homerun hitter, and it looks like that belief has fallen by the wayside. It makes you realize that there really is no limit to what you can expect to see in the competitive arena.

In the 13 year existence of the WNBF, there have been some remarkable onstage accomplishments. Dave Goodin's streak of nine consecutive top-three finishes immediately comes to mind. But one of the most incredible achievements took place in 1997, when Eugene DeVino won the World Championship in his first appearance on the world stage. A Rookie winning the worlds? Surely, that would never happen again. But as the aforementioned examples show, in the world of competitive sports, you should never say never!

At the Manhattan Center on November 16th, 2002, first time competitor Paul Neil became one of only 14 men in the history of the WNBF to garner the the title of World Champion - Claiming the Lightweight Division crown. And he set the Worlds on Fire when he rolled over 15 other outstanding athletes in the process. So it begs the question: What is the strategy that was responsible for Neil's meteoric Rise? " I try and enjoy what I do", the Canadian personal Trainer reveals. "Yet my goal is to always out-work everybody at the gym."

At 37, Neil might be a newcomer to the pro stage, but he's no neophyte in the weight room. "I started lifting when I was 17," he recalls. "I was playing football at the time and I wanted to get the girls!" Some 20 years later, he's a World Champion! Go Figure!. At 5'6, Neil grabbed the judges' attention immediately when he stepped on stage. Conditioning was his strong suit, as he pared 25 lbs from his offseason weight (200 lbs) to achieve deep striations from head to toe. But while cuts were his main claim to fame, he also carried plenty of mass and looked much bigger than your typical lightweight.

Neil has always been an outstanding athlete, competing in track and field, soccer and freestyle wresting in addition to football. And even now, he enjoys playing soccer one-on-one with his friends. But bodybuilding is front - and - center on his agenda. Accordingly, nutrition is a big part of his life. "I try to eat clean for hte most part although I do have one cheat meal per week" he reveals, "I have a sweet tooth: I love cheesecake, oreo cookies and Ice Cream! But the rest of the time, it's 6 meals per day.

His weight training formula is also very specific. "one of the main mistakes I see novice bodybuilders make is overtraining, working out 6-7 times a week, twice a day," The Calgary Alberta native explains. "When I started, I made the same mistake. Now I do short 15 minute workouts that are really intense. Rest is very important. I train 3 days in a row then I take a day off. I use German volume - four seconds lowering the weight and 2 seconds lifting it. It's good for building mass because it keeps the tension on the muscle."

Everything looks rosy for th up and comer now, but his situaiton was not always so bright. "I hurt my rotator cuff at one point and couldn't even lie down on my shouder," he recalls. " I got massages and went to the chiropractor to get the area looser. Now I do exercises to strenthen the muscles under the deltoids and chest to keep the injury from returning.

Neil's Worlds conquering debut is even more astounding when you consider he has only been competing for three years. His previous wins included the GNBF, Novice Western Canadian Championship and the Open Middleweight crown at the same show. Becoming a Canadian Champion captured him his pro card.

As for choosing the Drug Free Path, Neil makes no bones about his beliefs. "My true goal in life is to be a humanitarian" he explains "I love being drug free. In my opinion, drugs are for losers." Spoken like a true Champ

http://paulanthony.ca/blog/Synopsis of our Health & Fitness Expedition

Our mission is to lead, teach and inspire people to take massive action towards living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Step 1 completed! We came with great expectations for Mauritius Island and we are happy to say our expectations have been surpassed. We met with key decision makers and leaders, and made it happen! Through our press conference, newspaper articles, news broadcast to over 250 000 viewers, and interactive health and fitness workshops, Transformation 360 was able to make a major impact on the Mauritius government and community. They are ready to take massive action towards their health and fitness. We learned about the different Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and how collaborating with these organizations can allow us to reach more people internationally. After doing extensive research through meetings with top health professionals in Mauritius, we discovered that Mauritius ranked #1 in most of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Notably, Mauritius is #1 in diabetes rates. 50% of Mauritians are diabetic, and the rest are considered pre-diabetic or have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). A disturbing stat we found is that 50% of Mauritians will die of cardiovascular disease within working age (18-55). Furthermore, 30% of people over 30 years old are hypertensive, 40% of people over 30 years old are overweight, 16% of males are heavy drinkers, and the Mauritian diet consists of food high in fat, sugar, and salt. Between 2005 and 2010, the health care budget increased 80% and is still rising. Only 15% of Mauritians are physically active, indicating that there is a strong need for physical education, inspiration and motivation.

Most Mauritians start the day by spiking their blood sugar with white bread and tea. Their cultural addiction to sugar, pastries, and fried foods are going to cause them to be extinct like their national mascot the Dodo bird, as I discussed on MBC live news this week.

After our final presentation in front of all the Ministers, health professionals, trainers, dietitians, and government officials, the lead Minister of Health said that he would invite us to lead a very big festivity next March, where highly regarded delegates and the Prime Minister would attend, along with around 60 000 Mauritians. Another workshop we have been invited to is to lead and instruct 40 000 Mauritians to demonstrate physical exercise in our own art form.

What a great learning experience for us! We created a new hierarchy pyramid where health exceeds all other needs and wants. Our motto is "Health before Wealth." What is the purpose of having wealth if you are going to die before the age of 55? Without your health you really don't have anything at all.

Thank you Shannon Delves, Vick Pochun, and Harpal Sandhu for your contributions on this incredible journey! :)

Check out the health stats for Mauritius Island: 80% inactivity rate, #1 highest ranked for diabetes in the WORLD, 50% of people will die within working age (18-55) from heart disease, and 30% are obese. Transformation 360's mission is to lead, teach and inspire people to take MASSIVE action towards a healthy and SUSTAINABLE lifestyle vs. diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. We are on a global expedition around the world. First stop - Mauritius Island! We know this mission isn't an easy task; however, great things are starting to happen as we are connecting with key decision makers in order to change the health infrastructure from the ground up. Our meeting today with the Ministry of Youth and Sports was INCREDIBLE! Tomorrow we meet with the Minister of Health to confirm the details of a nationwide press conference and our health and fitness workshop series. For some reason, they are very impressed with us. Saturday, March 26th we have a massive workshop for potentially 5000 people. We have the National Women's Federation, Bodybuilding Federation, Olympic Federation, and all of the decision makers in the Health Ministry collaborating with us to fulfill our mission and vision. This is just a start of our dream. We foresee more great things coming our way. :)

http://paulanthony.ca/blog/Putting Health First

With its pristine beaches, deep blue sea and lush mountain ranges, Mauritius looks like paradise on Earth. But its people are dying.

According to Paul Anthony, a Calgary-based personal trainer and world champion natural body builder, half of those living on the island will die from cardiovascular disease by the time they reach age 55.

"That's so young - it's crazy," says Anthony, explaining that poor diet and lack of exercise are to blame for the disease's prevalence on the island in the southwest Indian Ocean.

"Only 15 per cent are active, like either walking or playing sports. So many people are just inside, watching TV and playing video games. They're becoming westernized."

So Anthony made Mauritius the first stop of a program he calls Transformation 360, taking with him his team of nutritionists, mental health doctors and personal trainers - including Vic Pochun, who works with Anthony at the Bay Club World Health and is from the island.

Their goal? To change the world with exercise, good eating habits and community involvement. Anthony's team targets communities such as Mauritius that have statistically high rates of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other diet and exercise-related illnesses.

"Our mission is to lead, teach and inspire people to take massive action toward living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle," Anthony says.

His desire to travel the globe, helping others, started when he was a teen, having just moved from Jamaica to Calgary. It was solidified after he had to overcome his own battles with physical and mental health.

He dreamed of playing professional football, but snapped his leg while playing for the Calgary Colts. The break was so bad, he was told if it broke again, he would likely have his leg amputated. After months of rehabilitation, he was running track when he was impaled through the shoulder with a javelin. He knew then he would never play ball.

He still has the scars - but these adversities helped Anthony, who now has 20 years in the personal training industry, find a balance between improving the physical body and strengthening the mind, something he calls MindScore. "It's really about who I am, what I'm about and what I've experienced," he says. "The mind's like the horse that pulls the carriage, which is the body, and you can't have a healthy body if the mind is not 100 per cent strong."

MindScore is mindset training that includes meditation, affirmations and visualization to complement and further a fitness regimen. Together, Anthony calls this the DreamBody program.

"It takes repetition to change the body - it takes repetition to change the mind as well," he said. "It's a mind gym with a little positive brainwashing."

And it's this positive whole mind and body change Anthony took to the people of Mauritius, complementing programs that the island's government and agencies such as the World Health Organization are already implementing.

For three weeks this spring, Anthony and his team travelled the island by bus, hosting educational seminars and trying to dispel long-standing approaches to nutrition and health (tea, sugar and bread are staples in the local diet). After meeting with various health officials, the team learned about other troubling effects of obesity on the island, such as a high incidence of diabetes and hypertension. Issues such as these have prompted Mauritians to make moves toward living a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle, such as taking pop machines out of schools. For Anthony's part, he believes in changing how people think, by creating a new hierarchy pyramid in which health exceeds all other needs and wants. His motto is health before wealth.

"Why live a fast life being wealthy and die before 55?" he asks. "Without your health, you really don't have anything at all."

It appears the Mauritians have embraced this concept, inviting the Transformation 360 team back to the island.

"This has been a lifelong plan of mine, to go around the world and help people," Anthony says, adding Mauritius is just the first stop on his 360-degree tour of the globe. "I love people, I love helping people and I think people love me."

MIND GYM: Everything STARTS with State of Mind (MiNdSCoRe Series)

You’ve made the decision to change your body. Take it to the next level. You’re at the gym working hard. With every repetition, your body grows and gets stronger. Your mind concurrently needs that same rigorous training. Physically, we call it a repetition. Mentally, we call it an affirmation. In conjunction, these two necessary components strengthen us in mind, body and spirit - essential to holistic personal growth for optimal and organic growth.

We have 60-80,000 thoughts per day, most of which are negative and regurgitated. It's no surprise to me when new clients enroll in my program, that the first thing they tell me is that I’m their last resort. A BIG responsibility, but understandably true. These people have attempted and been defeated by every exercise program available. Spending thousands of dollars, and after everything is said and done, even with some success have fallen victim to the yo-yo syndrome and been left in a defeated state, worse than ever. This is because people don’t understand the hierarchy or chronology of personal transformation.

Consider the following analogy: Think of your body as an apple tree. A necessary condition for this “tree” to grow beautiful, ripe and delicious fruits is the roots need to be watered and firmly engrained in the ground. MIND GYM (Mindset training) is the water for your mental and spiritual roots. These “roots” need to be watered daily through meditation, affirmation and clarity, if you wish to have passion, consistency, love and sustainable lifestyle change. On January 1 gym enrollment spikes! People spend hundreds of dollars with the resolution for CHANGE in their physiology. It breaks my heart to know that less than 10% of these people will have sustainable and tangible successes in the gym (and in their lifestyle) over the long term. I was inspired to develop the concept of MindScore for this reason. Earlier, I mentioned a hierarchy and chronology of personal transformation. MindScore uses these two variables as a central theme to create balance, energy and long lasting success in fitness and life.

Most people will tell you that the key to success in fitness/well-being is 80% nutrition. Respectfully, although each variable is mutually exclusively a critical success factor, I believe that state of mind is equally important and higher on the hierarchy in terms of chronology of mastery. (see figure 1.0)

MindScore is a system based on the flow of collaboration of 5 key components: MIND GYM, Nutrition, Stretching, Cardio and Resistance.

Mindset training: Mindset training involves defining your objective, framing your affirmations and priming them with social proof.

1. Defining your objective: Choose something that’s really important to you. Something you feel will help you grow as a person inside and out. Make sure it’s something you’re passionate about. For the purpose of this example, let’s say it's weight loss.
2. Framing your Affirmations: An affirmation has to be positive, in the present, true and YOU-oriented (nobody else is responsible for the success or failure of your goals). A great affirmation would be, “I’m in the process of getting six pack abs.”
3. Prime your Affirmation with Social Proof: As human beings, inherently our thoughts are negative. We are more receptive to other people’s success (or ability to succeed) than our own. For this reason, we must “energize” our objective and affirmation with statistical achievability through social proof. For example, the social proof to our weight loss affirmation could be as follows:
a. There are 6 1/2 billion people in the world. Last month 10,000 men and woman achieved their DreamBody by getting six pack abs. They did it. I can do it. It’s been done before and it IS possible. There is hope.

Our minds are powerful, but can be manipulated. An incredibly effective tool that works well for many of my clients is Rep Illusion. Rep Illusion works on the same concept as the saying, “Shoot for the stars and if you miss you’ll hit the moon."

Consider the following scenario:

It’s the end of a hard day, you’re at the gym and you need to do 20 alternating weighted lunges. Exhausting!

Using the concept of Rep Illusion, you tell yourself that your goal is to do 40 alternating lunges. Project that image of you conquering 40 alternating lunges in your mind’s giant movie screen. You’ll be amazed at how seamlessly 20 or 25 lunges will have come and gone.

There are so many techniques you can use to conquer your limitations. We haven’t even touched on Winning Meditation, used regularly by 10 time NBA Championship winning Coach Phil Jackson.

MIND GYM works and we’ve proven it. According to a one year tracking study conducted by Brand/Marketing Company StyleLabs (www.stylelabs.ca), two groups of respondents were tested (same age group, BMI, Activity Levels, etc.). Both groups received personal training 3 times a week, 2 days of cardio and a nutrition program. The Red group was also primed with MindSet training one week prior and during the six month trial. As you can see the Red group not only lost more weight, but also maintained it post-monitored training.

Your mind controls everything. Investing time and ritualizing the exercises discussed as a key component in your program will fuel your ability to conquer your goals and surpass any limitations you may have.
http://paulanthony.ca/blog/Ripped Abs

WHAT YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW ABOUT GETTING RIPPED ABS IS WRONG B#%CH!!

I’ve studied the top athletes with the best abs over the last 100 years. The Sprinter, the Gymnast, the Martial Artist and the Swimmer. One thing remains consistent with all of them. When masterfully displaying their art, their core is always engaged; exhaling out, fast or slow depending on their discipline. CHANNELLING YOUR CORE makes every rep, every exercise far more intense and twice as effective by driving blood flow to your abs and thereby changing its composition. To demonstrate, start by getting off your couch. Yes, you WILL need to stand up. Keep in mind, that what you’re about to do, super athletes practice without conscious effort. It’s so much a part of their form that it comes as naturally to them as breathing. What I want you to do is pull your belly button and your abdominal wall against your spine. At first this will feel very uncomfortable, but with practice it can be mastered.

The Sprinter - Let’s start channeling your core. Run in the same spot with high knees for 30 seconds, while breathing out rapidly through your mouth.

The Gymnast - For this simulation, extend your legs straight out in front of you in a pike position. You can sit on your hand or have your butt off the seat. Channel your core and hold for 30 seconds while exhaling out slowly. Beautiful.

The Martial Artist – As always, start channeling your core. If you are right handed have your left foot forward, left handed right foot forward. Throw 30 punches rapidly while breathing through your nose. Still a little uncomfortable but you’re getting better aren’t you?

The Swimmer - Lie on your stomach. Arch your body like a bent spoon. Channel your core. Now, synchronize your upper body with your lower body by pedaling through the waters like you’re aqua man/woman. Remember to hold your breath for 3 seconds and breathe out for 3 seconds for 80 strokes. With every exercise, you’ll notice this getting easier. Do this circuit 2-3 times. Apply this practice to every workout you do. Bicep curls, squats or even bench press. CHANNEL YOUR CORE. As a supplementary note, remember to implement conditioning exercises and a lean balance diet to help burn body fat, so we can see those RIPPED ABS. For a traditional KICKASS ab workout join me and Miryah Scott at www.paulanthony.ca/abs. I call this my rip it up ABS workout. This is badass!!
